About the Event
We are really excited to present this eclectic program of music that explores national and cultural traditions and musical belonging. Shostakovich's 1st string quartet was written relatively later in his life after the chaotic reception of some of his earlier more dramatic works and marks a return to a simpler, "spring-like" time. Reena Esmail's "This is It" is a exploration of the connections between Indian and Western traditions, while "Strum" by Jessie Montgomery draws on American popular music traditions. We'll close with the monumental "Home" by Kevin Puts, which is inspired by the turbulence of the refugee experience and the nostalgia for belonging.
